Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
