British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
